Adding a new card group

What is the difference between a card group and a card set?

A card group is the general category such as “Physics” and the card set is a subcategory such as “Equations” or “Experiments”

How do I add a card group?

ARDMS

Simply click on the icon as shown above. A box should appear asking you to name your card group. Name it what you will and click OK.

Note: You can also add a new card group by clicking file -> New Card Group

How do I Add a card set?

ARDMS

I still can’t add a card to my card group, why?!

To better organize your cards, you must have a card set in order to add cards. To add a card set to your new group simply highlight your new card group by clicking on it as shown below and then clicking on “Create new card set.”

There you got it!

Note: You can also add a new card set by clicking file -> New Card Set

How do I Delete a card group/set?

I can’t delete my card group! Why not?

To avoid people accidentally deleting hours of work, in order to delete a card group all card sets must be deleted first. Also, to delete a card set, all cards must be deleted.

For example, lets say I wanted to delete the card group labeled “Delete me card group.” (shown below)

ARDMS

If you try to click the delete card group button, the following error message will appear:

ARDMS

So, in order to delete the card group, you need to delete the card set labeled “Delete me card set.” However, if you try to delete the card set when there are still three cards in the set, another error message will appear.

ARDMS

So, first delete the cards in your set and then you can delete the card set and then the card group as follows:

ARDMS

Delete the cards then click here to delete the card set:

ARDMS

Then click on the “Delete card group button” shown below:

ARDMS

You have successfully deleted your card group.

I want to add 100 cards, but it will take me forever to go file -> new card a 100 times. Is there a faster way?

Yes. Simply click on the new card icon and a new card will appear. Rapidly click this until the desired number of cards appears. You can also repeatedly hit ctrl + N.

ARDMS

Editing Your Cards

To the right of the screen is where you will edit your cards.

ARDMS

The top of the screen labeled “6” means this is the top of card 6. The bottom of the screen is lacked “6 Back” which means this is the back of card 6.

How do I add text to my card?

Click on the desired card (front or back – you can tell because it will be outlined with a red box). Next click on the add text button shown below:
ARDMS

Add the text desired.

ARDMS

OK, I put my text in. Can I resize text & pictures and move it around?

Yes. Click on the text and a blue box will appear on the top of the desired text. Note that even if the text is very long, the blue box will appear only at the top of the selected text. Shown below:

ARDMS

If you’d like to make the text box longer, go to the very edge of the box until horizontal arrows appear as shown below:

ARDMS

Now that the double headed arrow cursor has appeared, click and drag the box to the desired length.

To make the text bigger, bring your mouse to the bottom of the box until the arrow cursor appears as shown below:

ARDMS

Left click on the cursor and hold down and drag the text to the desired size.

How do I move the text/pictures around?

ARDMS

Move your mouse to the middle of the box and the hand cursor should appear. Left click down and you can move the text to the desired position.

How do I delete a card? I keep pressing the button and the card won’t delete!

To delete a card simply press the “Delete Card button” as shown below:

ARDMS

What does the red bar do?

As shown below, the red bar increases the size of the viewable card.

ARDMS

If you clicked on the red bar to make the cards a lot bigger, this is what it’d look like.

ARDMS

Notice that the size of the cards increased.

What does the blue bar do?

ARDMS

This is what it’d look like after shifting

ARDMS

Notice that the order has changed as described above.

Tracking Your Responses:

ARDMS

Lets do an example to show how this feature works.

OK, so lets try to answer the question above in our heads or out loud while studying. Hit the "Flip Card" and then hit the space bar.

ARDMS

What is "Spaced Learning?"

Spaced Learning is based off the Leitner system for studying a lot of information. In essence, the method allows you to rate your card based on how well you answered the question. See below:

Answer Meaning

Excellent Knew the question right off the bat and did not hesitate or have to think very hard to come up with the correct answer.
Good You answered the question correctly but you had to think deeply to come up with the correct response
OK It took an extremely long amount of time to come up with the answer, and/or part of your answer was partially wrong.
Fail You got the answer incorrect, or you did not know.

Once you have graded your card, "Spaced Learning" will then calculate the next interval for repetition of that particular card based on an algorithm that takes into account how many times you answered the question correctly.

Thus, you will review the cards that you do not know more often and review the cards that you DO know less often. The advantage of this is that you do not waste valuable time reviewing information you already know!

For example, lets say that I first see a card that I am very familiar with. I look at the answer for verification, and I then mark the card as "Excellent." Since it is the first time, I will not see this card again for 5 days.

5 days goes by and I see the same question again. I still remember the answer to the question with ease and again answer Excellent, so the interval increases to 13 days.

If you see the question for the third time and answer correctly, the interval time increases exponentially until you do not see the card again for a very long time (in essence the card is in your long term memory, and you do not need to study it anymore).

This allows you to focus your efforts on the material that you struggle with and not worry about information you already know.

How do I turn on "Spaced Learning?"

ARDMS

You go to edit -> Spaced Learning. This will turn spaced learning on. When you go to play your flashcards, spaced learning will be activated.

How do I turn Spaced Learning off?

If you'd like to shut Spaced Learning off, you can just go to edit -> Spaced Learning and deselect it.

Getting to know your Spaced Learning Statistics Bar:

ARDMS

I keep seeing the same question over and over again? Why?

Once you mark a card as "Fail", it will be moved to the repeat pile. As long as you keep marking the card as "Fail", you will continue to see the card in the review pile. You will see the card as many times as is necessary until you memorize the answer and answer correctly with an "Excellent" or a "Good."

I thought if you mark a card as "Excellent" on the first time you see the card, you won't see the card for 5 days. I am seeing the card in 1 day, is something wrong?

No. Once you mark a card as "Fail", it will go to the repeat pile. When you then memorize the correct answer, and the second or third time (or however long it takes to memorize the card), you will repeat the card in 1 day because you had trouble with the card. If you see the same card the next day and answer it "Excellent", you then will not see the card for 5 days.

I am confused by the intervals in Spaced Learning. Can you explain it?

We understand that this maybe seem like a new concept, but most people are surprised that they are already familiar with  these concepts if they use flashcards. They have a stack of flashcards, and they separate them into different piles depending on how they are answered. Some separate them into "Right" and "Wrong" piles, and more emphasis is placed on the "Wrong" piles. We do the same thing albeit a little more sophisticated, but the concept is the same.

Can I just use Spaced Learning and forget about the details?

Yes. The program was designed to just be used and for the user not to worry about the complexities that is going on in the background. Just answer the questions in the card set (or the entire program), and rate your answers honestly. As you continue to study, answer the questions as they come due for review, and forget about the interview. You will learn faster and will retain the information longer by using Spaced Learning.

Can I trust Spaced Learning?

We have used and tested Spaced Learning for thousands of hours, and it is a trustworthy and efficient way of studying material.

Why is Spaced Learning better than Manually Tracking Responses?

We feel that you learn more efficiently using Spaced Learning. Each card is customized to the optimal repetition based on your responses. It can be a little different to get used to, but we are confident that as you continue in your studying, you will realize the power of Spaced Learning, and how it will help your learning at a fast rate.

How do I resize the size of the play window?

Since everyone has different monitor sizes, it will resize according to the size of your monitor. You can adjust the size of the viewing pane by doing the following:

ARDMS

If you’d like to adjust the height alone, go to the bottom of the box until the double vertical arrows appear and left click, hold and drag to the desired length as shown below:

ARDMS

If you’d like to adjust both the height and the width at the same time, go to the corner of the box and wait until the diagonal double headed arrow appears.

Left click and hold and drag the box to the desired size. (Shown below).

ARDMS

After you are finished the size of the box will be bigger or small and will be customized to your screen.

ARDMS

Notice that the box has changed and that the text has changed with it. You can customize how it will look that would be best for your monitor.

How do I search for text in the program?

ARDMS

Type in your text, hit "enter" and the results will show up.

ARDMS

Can I change the color of the flashcard?

Yes. See Below.

Can I paste a picture or text in from another program like Microsoft Word?

Yes you can. You can paste both text and pictures from the clipboard, but not at the same time. You will have to copy and paste one at a time. Lets give an example. Lets say I have a long paragraph about the kidney that I want to paste and study on a flashcard. The paragraph is in Microsoft Word as shown below.

ARDMS

Highlight the text that you want to copy by using the mouse or clicking Ctrl + A. Then go to Edit -> Copy (or press Ctrl + C) as shown below

ARDMS

Click on the “Paste from Clipboard” button (shown above) and you can paste what you have in your clipboard. Note that anything that is in your clipboard will paste meaning that you can copy from many sources such as the Internet, another program, or from a text document.

Note that you can also use Ctrl + V to paste instead of clicking on the “Paste from Clipboard” Button.

You can now adjust the text to make it fit better on the flashcard.

Repeat the process for pasting pictures.

Is there a way to play all the cards that I have in the program?

Yes. Just press the “Play all card sets” button

ARDMS

That’s it. Now you can adjust the screen to the dimensions you’d like for better viewing.

I’d like to print the flashcards out, is this possible?

Yes. You can either print out all your card sets or just a particular subject.

ARDMS

Printing Your Flashcards

As described above, you can print either your current card set (or subject), or all of your cards that are in your program.

Let’s assume you just want to print out a current card set called “Organic Chemistry.” It will look like this:

ARDMS

This is a layout of what the cards will look like when you print them. You print out both front and back on the same piece of paper. You then fold the piece of paper in half, and you can study on the road.

ARDMS practice

Current Layout: There are three options given under the current layout as seen below:

ARDMS practice

You can print out one card per page, 3 cards per page or 6 cards per page depending on your preference.

So, Print out the card page of your choice, then print out the back of the cards on a separate piece of paper or use the same piece of paper again to print the questions on the front of the page and the answers on the back of the page.

I’d like to enter an equation, but I can’t get the layout right. How do you do this?

Since most students have Microsoft Word, the program is compatible with Microsoft Equation Editor. You simply make the equation and/or text with superscript or subscript or special symbols that you’d like, and then you copy and paste into the program. An example is shown below.

ARDMS practice

Now select Microsoft Equation 3.0 show below:

ARDMS practice

Now let’s us say that you want to make the equation B = Ic/Ib. You would first select the symbol Beta under the “Select Symbol” label.

ARDMS practice

Then you would want to type the “=” sign and then select the style of equation you want which is top and bottom which is indicated by the arrow. You get thus far:

ARDMS practice

Now you want to type in Ic on the top then click on the bottom and type Ib.
To Add subscript or superscript highlight the letter or number or words you want to superscript/subscript and then use the following:

To superscript highlighted text -> hit ctrl -> “H” (H meaning Higher)

To subscript highlighted text -> hit ctrl -> “L” (L meaning Lower)

Example below:

ARDMS practice

You hit ctrl -> L while this is highlighted to make the “c” subscripted. Repeat for the “b” as well. And then you get your final product:

ARDMS practice

Now, click outside the box. You should see boxes around the equation. Then goto edit -> copy (shown below).

ARDMS practice

Now open the program and go to the card you’d like to paste it into and either click the paste button (see copy and paste section) or press ctrl -> V.

The equation appears in the program.

ARDMS practice

I don’t see Microsoft Equation Editor when I go to Insert -> Object -> Microsoft Equation 3.0
